Schwab IRA Options Trading: Approval Process and Setup

Schwab's Options Levels for IRAs

After the TD Ameritrade merger, Schwab consolidated its options approval system. For IRA accounts, the levels are:

  • Level 0: Covered calls only
  • Level 1: Covered calls + cash-secured puts + long options (calls and puts)
  • Level 2: Everything in Level 1, plus spreads (verticals, iron condors, collars, calendars)
  • Level 2 is the maximum for IRA accounts at Schwab. Higher levels requiring margin are restricted to taxable accounts.

    How to Apply

    Online (fastest method):

  • Log into Schwab.com
  • Navigate to "Trade" → "Options"
  • If you don't have options enabled, you'll see a prompt to apply
  • Alternatively: "Service" → "Account Settings" → "Trading Features" → "Options"
  • Complete the application with your experience and financial information
  • Submit and wait for confirmation (usually instant for Levels 0-1, same day for Level 2)
  • By phone:

Call 800-435-4000 and ask for the options trading department. Phone applications can be faster for Level 2 approval because the representative can clarify your experience in real time.

    Through the Schwab app:

Navigate to your IRA → Settings → Trading Permissions → Options. The mobile application process is identical to the web version.

    What Schwab Evaluates

Schwab's approval algorithm weighs these factors:

Trading experience: How many years you've traded options and how many trades per year. Level 2 typically requires 2+ years of stated options experience.

Financial profile: Annual income, liquid net worth, and total net worth. There are no published minimums, but stronger financial profiles receive faster approval.

Investment objective: For Level 2 (spreads), select "Growth" or "Aggressive Growth" rather than "Income Only." Schwab interprets conservative objectives as incompatible with spread trading.

Risk tolerance: Select "Medium" or "High." "Low" risk tolerance is inconsistent with a Level 2 request.

    Limited Margin for Schwab IRAs

Schwab offers limited margin in IRA accounts. This is separate from options approval and worth enabling:

  • Eliminates most settlement violations
  • Allows immediate reuse of proceeds from closing options positions
  • Required for efficient spread trading
  • Apply for limited margin at the same time as your options application. Go to Account Settings → Trading Features → Margin.

    After TD Ameritrade: What Changed

If you previously had a TD Ameritrade IRA with options trading, your approval level transferred to Schwab during the account migration. However, you should verify:

  • Your current approval level (check under Account Settings → Trading Features)
  • That limited margin is still active
  • That your options trading agreement is current
  • Some TD Ameritrade customers found their approval level was reduced during migration, particularly from Tier 3 (TD's spread level) to Level 1 (Schwab's equivalent). If this happened, reapply for Level 2 through Schwab—the process is straightforward.

    Schwab thinkorswim Integration

Schwab now offers thinkorswim (formerly TD Ameritrade's platform) to all Schwab customers. For IRA options trading, thinkorswim provides:

  • Advanced options chains with customizable Greeks displays
  • Options probability analysis and profit/loss diagrams
  • Paper trading mode to practice strategies before using real capital
  • ThinkBack for historical options chain data
  • Access thinkorswim through the Schwab website or download the desktop application. It works with your existing Schwab IRA login.
